20 Celebrities Who Were Intoxicated While Filming
For most people, drinking on work is a definite no-no. There aren’t many jobs that will allow employees to come to work drunk and still keep their jobs. However, for those working in Hollywood, things are a little bit different. Many actors have not only shown up to work drunk, but have even been known to drink while on set. Some of the biggest names in the industry have openly admitted to drinking while filming, and some believe that it even helps them work more efficiently. While some actors are simply drinking out of habit, others consume alcohol with the hopes of becoming closer to the character they’re portraying. Here are 20 celebrities who were intoxicated while filming.

Nicolas Cage – Leaving Las Vegas
Nicolas Cage is no stranger to going to extremes to bring his characters to life. Over the course of his career he has some some pretty intense things to prepare for roles. Apparently, while filming Leaving Las Vegas, he decided that some drinking was in order to help him get into character. Although this may seem a little extreme, it definitely worked in Cage’s favor as the film received many positive reviews.

Mickey Rourke – Barfly
In the 1987 film, Barfly, which was loosely based on the life of author, Charles Bukowski, Mickey Rourke decided to decided to really get into character. Although no one knows for sure whether or not Rourke was actually drunk during filming, his unwavering dedication to the role makes it a huge possibility. According to Bukowski: “Mickey appeared to really love his role, and yet without exaggeration he added his own flavor, his zest, his madness, his gamble to Henry Chinaski without destroying the intent or the meaning of the character.”

Fred Astaire is one of the most legendary actors of all time. However, even the greats aren’t without their flaws. While filming the 1942 film, Holiday Inn Astaire had several shots before and while filming the dancing scene.

Ari Gaynor – Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist
In the 2008 film, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Ari Gaynor played a drunk girl and decided to really become one with her character. While most actors choose not to actually drink while portraying drunk characters, Gaynor says that she “had to be truthful to the drunkery.” Sure, this may seem a little over the top, but there’s no denying that Gaynor is willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that she her roles are played with accuracy.

Margot Robbie – The Wolf of Wall Street
Margot Robbie is best known for her role in the film The Wolf of Wall Street. If you’ve ever seen the film it probably won’t come as a surprise to know that Robbie was drunk during some of the filming. Apparently, Robbie was very nervous about shooting sex scenes with Leonardo DiCaprio, and has to take several shots before they could begin filming again.
Billy Bob Thornton – Bad Santa
With a title like Bad Santa, it’s only fitting that Billy Bob Thornton was behaving badly on set. After all, it’s kind of difficult to be a drunk Santa Clause when you’re not actually drunk yourself. According to Thornton: “I’ve traditionally played really extreme characters and even in a comedy, if you’re going to play a guy like this, you can’t be sort of drunk, you know? And I wasn’t sort of drunk. You have to go completely into it.” Well, that certainly explains a lot.

Martin Sheen – Apocalypse Now
During the 1979, Apocalypse Now, Martin Sheen decided to take some real drinks in honor of his fictional character. While filming the movie’s opening scene, Sheen showed up to the set still drunk from his birthday certificate. He reportedly got extremely drunk and went all out for the scene, even injuring himself while breaking a mirror. Wow, talk about dedication.

Bob Hoskins – Super Mario Brothers
According to John Leguizamo, Bob Hoskins’ co-star in Super Mario Brothers. both he and Hoskins weren’t huge fans of the film. Apparently, they didn’t like working on the film, and decided that a few drinks were necessary in order to pass the time.

Shia LaBeouf – Lawless
Over the last several yeas, Shia LaBeouf has become well-known for some pretty strange behavior, so nothing about him is really shocking at this point. LaBeouf has admitted to drinking in the 2012 film, Lawless, and many believe that it was completely unneccessary for the whole. According to LaBeouf: “My drinking on this movie was as undestructive as I could possibly make it, if that makes sense. I did it for the movie. I didn’t drink off set for no reason.”

Edward Norton – Fight Club
Forget the ‘no drinking on the job rule’. While filming Fight Club, Edward decided that he wanted to live on the edge. During a scene in which Norton’s character is drunk and hitting golf balls, he had had several drinks. Fortunately; however, the scene turned out to be great and has become one of the most memorable scenes in the film.

Anna Kendrick – Drinking Buddies
Nobody was really that surprised when Anna Kendrick admitted that she’d actually been drunk while filming Drinking Buddies – after all, the tim is called Drinking Buddies. According to Kendrick: “During a scene at the bar, they gave me fake beer, but then during a scene where I’m playing cards with Jake, they gave me real beer, and I didn’t realize it… so every time I lost, I was pounding beer, and I didn’t realize it was real until halfway through the take. I was like, I’m super drunk right now! And so as soon as the take was over, I had to announce to everybody that I was drunk at work.”

Natalie Portman – Black Swan
The 2010 film, Black Swan, was an unusual and dark film that took viewers on a wild ride. However, it appears that movie goers aren’t the only ones who struggle with the film’s side. According to several sources, both Natalie Portman and her co-star, Mila Kunis, had to drink before shooting the film’s big soul season.

Robert Shaw – Jaws
Shooting a film that’s all about innocent people being attacked by sharks must be a pretty nerve-racking experience. With that being said, it’s no surprise that Robert Shaw, one of the film’s stars turned to the bottle while filming. Shaw also famously stated: “Drink? Can you imagine being a movie star and having to take it seriously without a drink?”

Richard Burton – Under Milk Wood
Richard Burton was another Hollywood star who saw nothing wrong with drinking, so when he worked with Elizabeth Taylor and Peter O’Toole in the 1972 drama, Under Milk Wood, the group definitely had their fair share of fun. According to Burton: ” I am not drinking on your film. That means only one bottle of vodka a day. I’m sober on two but when I’m drinking it is three or more.”

2011’s Rum Diaries, was based on a novel of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson. The film’s main character, Paul Kemp, was a journalist who loved to drink, and in order to bring him to life, Depp decided that he needed to have a few drinks too.

Neve Campbell – Wild Things
Many viewers tend to believe that shooting a sex scene is easy and fun for actors. However, several actors have admitted that having a few drinks before baring it all really helps. Before shooting a three some scene in the 1998 movie, Wild Things, Neve Campbell admitted to taking some shots along with her fellow cad members. Apparently Tequila is the drink of choice when trying to loosen up for an uncomfortable film scene.

Elizabeth Taylor – Under Milk Wood
During her prime, Elizabeth Taylor was one of the greatest stars in Hollywood. However, she certainly was not perfect. Taylor had a reputation for being a bit of a rebel, and everyone knew that she was a pretty heavy drinker. Like her co-star and former husband, Richard Burton, Taylor was also drunk while shooting the film Under Milk Wood. Apparently, Taylor showed up to the set so drunk one day, that she had to be held up by fellow cast members in order to give her lines.

Brad Pitt – Fight Club
Well, Edward Norton wasn’t the only person who had a few drinks while filming Fight Club. Pitt was also drunk while filming a few scenes in the film, including the scene in which he and Norton were fighting outside of the bar when Pitt famously stated, ” you hit me in the ear!” Since Norton wasn’t supposed to actually hit Pitt during that scene, his reaction was actually genuine.

Daniel Radcliffe – Harry Potter
It’s kind of hard to imagine clean-cut actor, Daniel Radcliffe, doing anything remotely rebellious. However, the star has admitted to that he has an addictive personality, and as a result, alcohol became a serious problem for him. During an interview, Radcliffe revealed that he was often drunk while filming scenes for Harry Potter. According to Radcliffe: “I can honestly say I never drank at work on Harry Potter. I went into work still drunk, but I never drank at work. I can point to many scenes where I’m just gone. Dead behind the eyes.”

Jennifer Lawrence is best-known for her role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games film series, and she has quickly became a fan favorite. In 2013, Jennifer Lawrence, admitted to drinking while shooting The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Lawrence said that it was her first time “drinking at work” and that the experience was fun. Well, it’s all making sense now. Perhaps the reason behind Katniss Everdeen’s fearlessness is alcohol.
